I attended this special exhibit at the Metropolitan back in 1985 and purchased this book at the time because I couldn't afford any of the wonderful reproduction sculptures in the gift shop. Years later I had the honor of meeting Mr Mackay-Smith when I was riding with the Blue Ridge Hunt in Virginia. He was an amazing gentleman, veterinarian, journalist, sportsman and horseman. The ponies he bred at Farnley Farms are legendary and set the standard of excellence for Welsh breeds in North America.

The book chronicles the evolution of equine accouterments. We learn all about the changes to equestrian garments, tack and horse-drawn vehicles throughout history. An interesting read for horsey folk, and the illustrations are lavish, full color eye candy.

An excellent book for research, or for enjoying the plates and for learning about horses and riding and driving.
American bias if you need British information but fairly well balanced. The auithors mention different names for carriages for example.

A book to enjoy and a book for learning.
