This book tells the story of pastor Petter Kummel, and his wife, Mona, in the late 1940s, living on a remote Finnish archipelago in the Baltic Sea. Petter arrives at his first post, settles in, and falls in love with the people, the harsh landscape, and the rural life. The narrative is a story of daily lives – fishing and farming, as well as the celebrations and tragedies.

The writing is beautiful and atmospheric. The characters are vivid. It is a study in contrasts between Petter, the dreamer, and Mona, the practical one. It reminds us to appreciate happiness when it arises.

It is not a book for anyone seeking action. The majority is a quiet, reflective story of community. I loved the first three quarters of this book. It takes an unexpected turn toward the end, which significantly changes the tone. It is a novel about the power of nature and the fragility of life.

Kuninkaan Anna por Ulla-Lena Lundberg

Tässä yhteisniteessä ovat niin Kuninkaan Anna (Kungens Anna) ja Kökarin Anna (Ingens Anna), joista jälkimmäisen suomenkielinen nimi ei ole paras mahdollinen. Ensimmäisessä osassa kalastajaperheen parikymppinen Anna seuraa taiteilijaa Tukholmaan, toisessa osassa seurataan Annan elämää myöhäisempinä vuosina, jolloin hän on opettajana Paraisilla ja Itä-Uudellamaalla, ja lopulta takaisin Kökarissa. Annassa kiehtoi eniten positiivinen asenne ja oppimisen ilo, ihmissuhdekuvioista en jaksanut niin innostua, ja toinen osa varsinkin pyyhkäisi vuosien läpi tosi nopeasti.… (más)

Jouduin voittamaan omat ennakkoluuloni lukeakseni Jään. Ehjä juuri, koska sitä on kehuttu paljon. Jää on niitä kirjoja, jotka on luettava loppuun voidakseen muodostaa mielipiteen. Loppupuolen tragedia muuttaa kaiken. Lundberg kuvaa uskoa aidon tuntuisesti. Hänen kuvaamanaan ihmisissä ja saaristoyhteisössä on lämpöä ja karheutta, mutta myös vikansa. Ihmisten ymmärtämisen lisäksi tällaiset tarinat auttavat parhaimmillaan ymmärtämään, miten nykyinen Suomi syntyi viime sotien jälkeen. Pastorskan kalaisia ihmisiä on varmasti tarvittu.… (más)
