Walt Whitman - the transcendentalist. This book consists of a handful of short pieces (some really short, some longer) that are all reflecting on the Civil War. A lot of it, for me, was just really tragic but all written in the classic Whitman style, so in that way it was riveting despite the content.

This book weaves together excerpts from Whitman's correspondence and diaries from the war years with his war poetry. It is a different approach to Whitman. I found that better understanding the context of the poems made them all the more vivid.
