I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of The Getaway List. I enjoyed the narration and thought it was well done. I'm glad I had the opportunity to experience this version of the book.

The Getaway List felt like a true coming-of-age story, since our main character, Riley, has just graduated high school and is exploring who she is and what she wants to do with her future. She initially heads for New York City to visit Tom, but they are quickly joined by a couple friends from school and a new friend along the way. The story takes place over the course of a summer full of adventures, blooming relationships, and the friends discovering their individual selves apart from family expectations. It was great to see so much character growth in Riley and all of her friends. I'll admit that the parent in me cringed a bit when Riley impulsively took off immediately after graduation, straining her relationship with her mom. In the end, though, I was happy with the way things were resolved. There are some hints of romance along the way, but it's very slow burn. It's almost frustratingly slow, but I think there's also a great lesson in these characters trying to figure themselves out before diving into something they weren't quite ready for. I overall enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more books by Emma Lord.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio, Macmillan Young Listeners and NetGalley for the free review copy of The Getaway List. All opinions in my review are completely my own.

Truly, I do not know why I let this book sit in the black hole of kindle-land for months. It's amazing. Yet again, Emma Lord has hooked me with lovable characters, great humor, and yummy food. (seriously Emma, you owe me food now.)
What I really liked seeing was the sister relationship between Abby and Savvy. It felt so real, complex, and complicated. Their difficulties in understanding each other and their new connection were perfectly written and it felt like they were sitting next to me.
I also have to note that I ship Leo and Abby so much.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Lord's books are addictive reads that are difficult to put down. I highly recommend this one for fans of emotional ya contemporary stories.

Rating: 5/5
Language: a**, d***, s*** f***, probably a few others that I missed
Romance: a few kisses, girls in relationships with girls
Spiritual: n/a
Violence: n/a

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are my own and a positive review was not required.

Pepper is being pressured by her mom to do some snarky Tweeting for her mom's company. There's a feud brewing between her family's fast food company and a small business called Girl Cheesing. What Pepper is slow to find out is that her classmate Jack is on the other side of the Twitter war.
Pepper is also talking to Wolf on the school's social media site (which happens to have been created by Jack).
The book has lots of conflicts and hurdles, characters that are richly developed, conflicts with family, self, and friend groups, and a sweet love story.

Oh, I am such a sucker for the childhood-friends-become-lovers trope, and this book did not disappoint in that respect! I'm not a huge fan of the fake-dating trope, however, but the author makes charming use of it. June and Levi are childhood friends who've drifted apart, but re-connect in their home town after both are dumped by their exes in a spectacularly public fashion. I liked watching June and Levi's friendship get rekindled and then build into something more. The side plot of wedding planning together feels a bit much though, like another layer of forced proximity is being piled on when it's not really needed. The themes of regret and loss throughout the book give a bit of depth to help offset the shallower fake-dating premise of the main storyline. It's always nice to see a main character focus on personal growth as well as relationship growth, like June does. My thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!½

It started a little rough because it felt juvenile and I didn't love how haphazardly the characters were introduced, but once I got into it I was hooked. Devoured it in one day, I loved the drama and the romance and I cried at the end.

Tweet Cute--a solid and fun romance novel--will be a great way to unwind after a long week. You'll smile and maybe even laugh a bit.

Pepper grew up in Nashville but has lived in New York for four years, scrambling to be the best in her very competitive private school. She's an overachiever. She's the swim team captain, she makes great grades, studies a lot, and does most of the social media for her mom's company even though they pay people to do this job. Her dad still lives in Nashville running the family's original restaurant. With the divorce, Pepper and her sister move to NYC with their mom to work in the corporate office of the now huge chain of restaurants. Her sister attends college, so it's only Pepper and her mom. Pepper's mom oozes intensity, which stresses Pepper out, for she doesn't want to disappoint her mother. This desire explains Pepper's need to be the best student by overachieving.

Jack loves his family's small, local restaurant but wants a different future in tech. He's created an app that the students at school love called Weasel. The students use it to make study groups and help each other, but you can also meet people in hopes of dating. Everyone is given an animal as their avatar, so it's completely anonymous. If you are texting someone exclusively, the app will surprise you (pop goes the weasel) with the identity of the person. The administration of the school believes the app could be harmful and tries to shut it down. No one knows that Jack developed the app. Jack's twin brother is the overachiever in their family. He's involved in everything and socializes a lot as well. Only Pepper can tell them apart, which Jack doesn't understand because they're very different people.

Pepper and Jack text on Weasel, but they don't know each other's identity and the app hasn't revealed their names yet. In real life, Jack annoys Pepper because he doesn't seem to care about much--he's definitely not Type A. When Jack's brother fails to accomplish her many duties for everything he's involved in, he always has Jack do them. That's how Jack and Pepper end up spending time together. They need to plan the swim and dive fundraiser. Great--no problem. Well, here's where the conflict comes in. The big time chain Pepper's mom owns starts a new menu item that is exactly like Jack's family's signature menu item. Eventually, a Twitter war ensues. Guess who runs each Twitter account? Yep--Pepper and Jack. They decide they will not be offended by the other and let the chips fall where they may. Pepper feels that her mom is pushing into rudeness and hates being a part of the rivalry. The only times they feel truly appreciated and "seen" is on the app. Enjoy the story as they get closer and closer to becoming truly a cute couple.

I really enjoyed listening to this novel. They're good kids and want to do what's right. Enjoy!

Old friends + fake dating = a real relationship...call it formulaic, but it works. The Break-Up Pact is adorable, and although some parts are slightly predictable I really enjoyed it. There were fully fleshed out characters who weren't perfect and great friendships, family relationships and found family.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange for an early review.

When Riley Larson finally graduates from high school, she makes the decision to visit her best friend, Tom, who lives with his mother in New York City. Tom is happy to see Riley and they immediately begin tackling the Getaway List the two of them wrote as freshmen. Along for the ride are Tom's friends who welcome Riley with open arms, but they are all carrying secrets. What starts out as a short weekend, turns into a much longer and more emotional adventure than any of them planned.

New York City, the setting of The Getaway List, is the most enjoyable part of this book. Some elements of the plot come across as very realistic, but the relationships between characters are underdeveloped. Also, Tom's part of the story is particularly weak and is left somewhat unresloved. The middle part of the narrative becomes repetitive and slow in places and often does not move the story toward a satisfying conclusion. More humor would have been a welcome addition to the story. However, the dialogue is down to Earth and believable with likable supporting characters. Overall, The Getaway List is one of the weaker stories written by Emma Lord but is still entertaining.½

As this story begins, Riley Larson is just graduating high school. Her BFF Tom no longer lives in the area, but he can watch the ceremony being live-streamed, so she does their secret handshake on the stage. We understand right away that Tom is still the most important person in Riley’s life, even though their relationship is supposedly platonic. (We don’t buy that for even a minute.)

Riley is at loose ends after graduation - everyone else, it seems, knows what they want to do and will be off to college, but Riley only garnered a hat-full of rejections. She decides to take off for New York City for the weekend to see Tom in real life. They haven’t been together since Tom’s mom Vanessa moved them to Manhattan the summer after freshman year of high school. It was, according to Riley, “a bold attempt to ruin both of our lives.” Riley felt like she always was “the bravest version of herself” when she was with Tom. And anyway, they have items they need to cross of the “Getaway List” they made together but never were able to accomplish.

Once in New York, Riley has a wonderful time, makes some new friends - Mariella and Luca; renews some old ones - with Jesse, Eddie, and Dai; and experiences a freedom she hasn’t felt since Tom left. Much to the detriment of her relationship with her mother, she decides to stay the whole summer. Riley, Tom, and their new friends make their way through the Getaway List, and have a blast doing it.

In the background, there is drama with the fraught relationships between Riley and her mother, and Tom and his mother. The supporting characters have their own issues to work out, although they are not as seminal as those besetting the two main protagonists.

There is also, of course, the looming elephant in the room: the feelings between Riley and Tom that go beyond friendship.

The story arc may be quite predictable, but the journey is a pleasant one to take in this ultimately joyous YA romance novel.

This is a cute YA about a Broadway obsessed teen girl trying to find her Mom and sort of re-creating Mamma Mia while she does it.

Teen romance, theater kids, Broadway references galore.

Fun and lighthearted. Now it's time to go listen to some ABBA.

3.5

This was a cute kind of spin on The Parent Trap where two teen girls learns via DNA test that they are sisters and while at summer camp try to find a way to figure out what happened and bring their parents back together.

There’s also general camp hi-jinx and some romance and discussions about teenagers struggling to find their place in the world as they grow up and relationships change.

Lots of LGBTQ characters.

I read this in a day. I am working through a much darker bleak book and was stuck and not reading much so this was a great change of pace. YA is always a great way for me to relax.

Teenaged love/hate via tweet and chatting via secret identity. Falling in love in real life, by accident, while falling in love with a different (but really the same!) person.

I really did adore this read. I loved that this book had such a unique premise and really enjoyed how this book was structured so much. I LOVED THE concept of this book as well. I thought the book was such a fun read and for a book set in NYC so realistic. I loved that this book had dual POV and I am always a fan of books that feature twins and this book focused on that realtionship in a unique way. I really loved the various levels "sides" of the romance this book progressed throughout the read. I loved how these characters growed so much throughout this read. I loved the unexpected plot twists in this read and really found this to be a refreshening read!

I really loved this book. As a self pofessed theater nerd this was everything and I loved. This book followed a theater nerd on a quest to find her birth mom. This book really focused on found fmaily, a fun sumemr job, a hate to more romance, a smaller cast of characters. This book made me laugh out loud. I really loved the anviety rep but this book just made me smile. I really felt how truthful this was about the theater world and really loved all the side characters!! Such a great read. If you loved tweet cute, def check this one out!
