Told in reverse order - this is the story of the friendship between Jules and Imogen and what went wrong. Imogen is the rich heiress - she is also a cheat, a thief and a runaway - or is she? Jules is the poor friend who is tough and wants to be better than she is. She'll do anything ( and I mean anything) to make her life better. As you read on -you discover what lengths some people will do to, to have money and success.
And how everything is not quite what it seems...
Great book for fans of "We were liars". My only criticism was I felt it got a bit convoluted and rushed at the end, as the author tried to tie up loose ends to make the start of the book fit. It was refreshing to read a novel where you hate the main character.

This book is an engaging children's book that follows two kids, Pauline and John-John, as they work together to count their money in order to buy ingredients for lemonade. Through a relatable and entertaining story, the book teaches young readers about basic financial concepts such as counting, saving, and spending. In the classroom, this book can be used as an introduction to money and math concepts for younger students. Teachers can create activities where students practice counting coins and bills, as well as calculating total amounts needed for purchases. The book also encourages cooperation and problem-solving skills as the characters work together toward a common goal.

My advise: Go into this book completely blind. Think, 'why do people like this so much?'. Be a little underwhelmed. Then it creates the best effect. ;)

This book started off great. I liked the story concept, the characters were interesting, and it was a fairly easy read. It wasn’t as good as We Were Liars though and at the end I felt like I still didn’t understand enough. I feel like the author could’ve given more character information about Jule. It was a little confusing on what information was real and what was made up in her head and I felt that a little bit more of an explanation about her childhood and why she became the way she was would’ve been helpful.

An interesting story and certainly full of twists, but I found the beginning less than compelling and the writing just average. Frankly, I did not understand the protagonist or her motivations.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing style captured me as did the story. The main character is extremely traumatized and the question is why. I did not suspect the ending, but it made sense. I would definitely read more from this author.

Abandoning this one, may try again another time. UPDATE: Jk I finished it anyway. Didn't get better - still left thinking "What? But why?" There seems to be a serious lack of motive established throughout this, that ends up leaving a hole.

Stay away if you want events that have a coherent order, characters with clear (or any) motivation, or a story that's unique and unpredictable - because the surprise is pretty clearly predictable from early on

Thoughts:
I almost abandoned this. I even moved it to my "Attempted" shelf. But then I was on the train and had to stand, so this book on my phone was my only reading option for that half hour.

To clarify, I didn't hate this book, despite it's one star. I just did not enjoy it, though clearly many do. Though I can appreciate non-linear stories, this one got quite confusing, jumping all over in time and in location, to the point where I really could't give you a straight placement of events, just a general "before this, after that" or them. This ended up leaving some holes for me, and some questions still unanswered as to why some things were mentioned or happened.

Quick page turner about a teenaged girl with a traumatic brain injury and some memory loss.

The surprise of the story wasn't a huge surprise to me but I enjoyed the story anyway.

Once again I'm left feeling that as an adult this book is just so-so. If I was part of the YA intended audience I probably would have enjoyed it more.

We were rich kids and there once was a king with three daughters… hum… it’s a depressing story and not much is happy but it’s worth a quick read. The writing is good but I’m just not sure about the story.

Lacking the magic of "We Were Liars" since the twist is used as a significant (but ultimately stagnant?) plot device in "Family of Liars". The criticism of "We Were Liars" - affluent white people having first-world problems - seems even more applicable here.

From Genuine Fraud to We were Liars

I originally picked this up because I read Genuine Fraud by the same author and I genuinely enjoyed it. Pun intended. While I feel like the description of the book tells you everything you need to know about what it is about so I won't be going into much detail I will say it's a quick read.
The writing is good--poetic, but not pretentious. If the editor hasn't done his or her job, I tend to do it in my head while I'm reading, but I didn't need to here. Lockhart's prose is clear, consistent, and vivid. The narrator's voice is believable, fresh, and likable. It makes it a much more enjoyable read when the author is clear on what he or she wishes to express. this is the sort of book that could be spoiled VERY easily, so I won't say too much about it. The story follows the wealthy Sinclair family who owns a private island near Martha's Vineyard where they spend summer every year. The self-named Liars are three cousins and one outsider, all around the same age, who become best friends and allies. There's romance, interesting social commentary, and CRAZY family dynamics. What you will probably ask me next is why this received four but not five stars. Firstly, the ending was somewhat predictable due to lots of heavy foreshadowing by the author. If you figure out the ending it takes a bit away from the story. Overall a very good read and very recommendable.

[b:Genuine Fraud|33843362|Genuine Fraud|E. Lockhart|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1503003099l/33843362._SY75_.jpg|54780211]
I confess. I’m one of those people. I judge a book by it’s cover. Well, in a good way of course! If the cover appeals to me then I will read the blurb and see if the story appeals as well. That was the case with Genuine Fraud. That cover is so eye-catching that I secretly hoped the blurb would be ‘my kind of thing’. Although today someone told me covers aren’t always a safe bet. I will say my gambles have paid off lately go me.

As you’re reading my review of Genuine Fraud I think it’s safe to say it ticked the right boxes! And what a wonderfully fun read it was. Yes…it’s a little dark, a little murderous but you can’t help but immerse yourself in this fast-paced, thrilling tale. I enjoyed the aspects of the story I feel like it adds to the story.

The first thing to say is that the story is told in reverse. The reader starts at the beginning of the book with chapter 18. Towards the end of the novel, you find a chapter 19 which fills in a few of the blanks. I don’t think I have read a book presented in this format before and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was exciting and different, each chapter revealing a little more of what actually happened to the characters. I was questioning everything. I believed no one. Wonderfully compulsive.

I’ve seen a number of mixed reviews for this book. Many of the readers have previously read one or more of the author’s novels. I don’t fall into that category and E. Lockhart was a brand new author to me. From what I’ve seen, Genuine Fraud is quite different to the author’s other works and maybe that’s the problem? Starting Genuine Fraud with no previous experience may have helped me. I’ve also seen many comparisons to The Talented Mr. Ripley. Well, here’s a bombshell for you, I’ve neither read the book nor seen the film! I will be totally honest with you now and confess to absolutely no knowledge of the plot.. Maybe that helped me enjoy this book a little more than others, maybe I missed a number of subtle nuances others got.

Would I recommend this book? I would. I managed to read Genuine Fraud in a day. It would have been fairly easy to read it in less time than that had I not had other obligations. I enjoyed my first experience of E. Lockhart’s writing and I’m looking forward to adding We Were Liars to the TBR in the future. It’s a gripping, multilayered read which I found compulsive and thrilling.

The audiobook is really good! My 7yo and I have been listening to this together. Coincidentally, I just finished [b:The House in the Cerulean Sea|45047384|The House in the Cerulean Sea|T.J. Klune|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1569514209l/45047384._SY75_.jpg|62945242] so I saw a lot of similarities (to it and the OG mutant story X-Men). My daughter now thinks "wonky" is a slur, which is weird, but hey at least she gets what the book is trying to say.

I liked this book and tagged it as a Twilight-alternative because girls who want to be Bella should get a load of Frankie Landau-Banks. She will rock their worlds.

This book wasn't perfect (I agree with Michelle that the author overused the imaginary negatives, and I agree that the first half was better than the second), but I couldn't put it down.

I also studied Foucault's take on the panopticon (but, uh, in my junior year of college, not sophomore year of high school) and I thought it was great to bring that level of criticism into what is essentially a teenage saga of love and revenge.

But is it really just a saga? There are a lot of big ideas in this book. It could spark some really interesting conversations about feminism, gender equality, class distinctions, civil disobedience, and social hierarchy.

I think it totally should've beat [b:What I Saw and How I Lied|4052117|What I Saw And How I Lied|Judy Blundell|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41IFVJpVjjL._SL75_.jpg|4099124] for the NBA.

I just finished a long complicated book so this was the perfect uncomplicated read in-between at only 6 hrs as a audiobook. It hooked me in quickly but now that it's over I'm not sure how much I really liked it. The Martha's Vineyard rich kids just weren't that interesting

The plot of E. Lockhart's "We Were Liars" didn't resonate with me because it was obvious from the beginning. The character descriptions became mundane and uninteresting, perhaps reflecting the mental state of the main character.

Throughout the course of the book, the family's portrayal was largely based on stereotypical representations of privilege and obnoxious attitudes. Thought-provoking and introspective themes were tried out, but the forced nature of these elements in the writing made reading more tedious than it might have been.

I had higher expectations for this book because it had received so much hype, but they were unmet.
