Who is she?
The photograph was taken in the 1940s and can be found on page 167 of Life on the Lower East Side, 1937 - 1950 a book of photographs by Rebecca Lepkoff. She was one of the many great photographers to come out of the New York Photo League (also look at the following links for this important but largely forgotten organization -- NYPL, Telefonica Exhibit, Columbus Museum, This Was the Photo League). The photograph of the girl was probably taken in the area between the two-bridges, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge, a group of lost streets in lower Manhattan -- Madison, Monroe, Oak, James, Roosevelt, and Oliver Streets -- all of which were largely demolished and replaced by the ugly buildings of the Al Smith housing projects.… (más)
