Ehud Lavski and Yael Nathan’s Midnight Radio anthology collects sixteen short comic stories. Each tells a different story, but all are hauntingly sweet. The titular story features a young woman seeking out a mysterious radio signal that only plays a midnight and that gives her hope. “Test” focuses on a trial of humanity’s worthiness to enter the universal community. “/HUG” details the sad ending of an online world similar to World of Warcraft and what it means both to those who enjoyed the stories and the non-playable characters. “The Nintendo” and “Prey” both feature a team of kids encountering supernatural creatures, though they do not emerge unscarred. “The Cave” features an author’s sacrifice to cure his writer’s block, while “The Secret Room” deconstructs the comic book medium through its characters. “Kurzweil’s Time Machine” may be the funniest, featuring an old man stubbornly bragging about his time machine even though he won’t allow others to see it. Ehud Lavski’s writing beautifully taps into themes of loss and love, friendship and fear, all only in a handful of pages for each story. Yael Nathan’s art is gorgeous and she works in amazing details that add to the story and encourage the reader to pore over the panels. “/HUG” alone is chock-full of Easter eggs and nerd references right from the first panel. Midnight Radio comes in a beautiful slipcase edition that compliments the stories and artwork inside.… (más)
