1550 The Roman Catholic Church and the Creation of the Modern Irish State 1878-1886, by Emmet Larkin (read 26 Jan 1980) This book is drawn mostly from letters written by Irish bishops of the time, and was most interesting. Edward McCabe became Archbishop of Dublin after the death of Paul Cardinal Cullen in 1878, and was made Cardinal on March 30, 1882, with four others. Cardinal McCabe died Feb 11, 1885. Much of the book concerns his rather pro-British stand and the effort to get William J. Walsh named as his successor. Walsh was appointed in June 1885 and held the see till 1921.
