I was a big Houston Astros fan as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s. Houston already had some amazing pitchers with Joe Niekro and - my favorite - J.R. Richard, and then they added Nolan Ryan. This is a great little book that profiles his amazing career and many of the records he set. Not only was he blazing fast (100 mph fastballs) but he threw 7(!) no-hitters and had over 5,700 strikeouts in a long 27 year pitching career.

The back of the book says "keep boys reading!" and this is a good book for baseball-obsessed kids (like I was back then). It's not long but describes his career in an easy way that will appeal to kids looking at their heroes. Not only was Ryan a great pitcher but he was a decent and down-to-earth guy off the field. (I received this book free from Goodreads.)

This is a good choice for starting on this topic for either children or adults who wants something very brief. The author leans toward Richard III's guilt, but is pretty even-handed in laying out the arguments. There are lots of illustrations, which add to the attractiveness of the book, but the reader should be aware that they are mostly Victorian prints.

A better book for adults is A.J. Pollard's Richard III and the Princes in the Tower, which is also gorgeously illustrated. I don't recommend Alison Weir's the Princes in the Tower, unless one already knows a fair amount about the subject½
