I love reading about the domestic lives of middle class families in different cultures. This novel was a lovely read and the characters were well rounded and relatable. Both the siblings’ narration was fascinating as it revealed the mindset of each while both being oblivious to the drama that fate was playing with them. After reading for awhile I realized I had seen the movie and both are equally good.

This novel was told in two parts, both first person. Each part tells a similar story but from a different perspective. First is Tanay, a young man who falls in love with a male tenant in his parents’ house. Second is Anuja, Tanay’s sister, who runs away with the tenant but is later abandoned by him. While Anuja never learns of Tanay’s love and romance with the tenant, Tanay is devastated when he runs off with Anuja.

Both parts are full of depression, angst, confusion, and anger. It is sad how little these two siblings share about themselves with one another, especially because they could have been a real comfort to each other.

The concept of the novel is interesting, though I was not deeply affected by the content or the writing. A lot of the words were not translated from Marathi so I had to guess about what and who they were talking about.
