Very mixed quality of essays, mostly on the French revolution, with an interest in how it affected the "mob." The essays were written in the late 70s or early 80s, in homage to Rude, who popularised focus on the unreported masses of the working class. Arranged chronologically, from Covenanters in Scotland (this one filled with subjective statements no hard data given to back said judgements on: irritating) to 19th violence in Catalonia (this one good if only someone had confiscated the exclamation mark from his typewriter and red-pencilled the coy asides to the reader).
