This book documents the myriad of reasons why the Italian military was set up to fail in the second world war, full of institutionalized, systematic and leader-driven incompetence. There are some wince-worthy moments where the author makes sweeping references of old-school standard explanations of some off-topic aspects of the war, but by and large this is a well-researched and argued examination of the Italian military machine.

Top academic research on the intersection of political power and military implements that characterized the two countries (and distinguished them from myriad far right regimes often labeled 'fascist'). Very interesting chapter on German military-cultural foundations, built on notions of 'effectiveness', that made the Wehrmacht so lethal even when bastly outnumbered.
