This story really shows the diversity between families all over the world. In terms of what they eat, what their homes look like, the difference in the environment they live in. How in each different place, families might do things differently in regards to how they live life and many more things. It shows how families in different places have fun with each other, whether it be sports or other things like art. I like how it informs you that everyone is different but at the end of the day we are all part of the " Human Family."… (más)

Family is something that everyone has, whether they like it or not. Family also means something different to everyone. For me, family means unconditional love, support, and is very important. This book goes through pictures of different families and how they perceive family. I loved this book because it shows that there are many different kinds of families, but the love is always the same. I would read this book in a classroom and happily add it to my library because we live in a very diverse world. If I could change just a little bit of the hate that people feel by exposing children to the different cultures and families in the world, maybe I would be able to say "I changed the world". I believe that teacher change the world one young mind at a time.… (más)

This book is centered around diversity in the world. Every page has a different family from places all over the globe. Kinkade took the word family and broke it down to every element that makes a family, whether it be a large family or a family of two. The opening words of the pages connect together to make a complete sentence when talking about a certain aspect of family. Kinkade includes several cultures into this book. She also gives insight to how those cultures work, live, cherish memories, and worship. Showing children about cultures other than their own is a great way to create an open minded child. The photographs in this book are actual photos taken by Elaine Little, which give the book a realistic feel. We are able to see actual people that Kinkade talks about, seeing their houses, their work places, their difference through photos. One phrase that stood out to me was “And while every family is different, they are all part of the human family”. This quote shows children that all humans are equal, no matter their culture or ethnicity. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would use it in the classroom to teach children about other families and cultures.… (más)

Spanish people colonized the Philippines, so the dominant religion is Catholic. There are few Muslims and some Protestants. Many children help their parents with chores, and some work on the streets selling newspapers. There are different tribes and some children try to preserve their culture by practicing traditional dances, but some children have plans to live in the city once they are old enough. Most of the people live in rural areas, and they produce vegetables or rice. Many children walk to school for an hour or two. Rice is served in almost every meal, and is a great part of the Philippines economy. Some teenagers work as a pedicab. A pedicab is a bicycle that has an attached carriage, and people put anything that can fit in the pedicab. The children of Philippines are eager to better themselves. I enjoyed the book, and now I want to go to the Philippines. Students can learn a lot about the Philippines through this book. Students can learn about different tribes, foods, and sacrifices that Filipino children have to do to attend school. For an activity I would try to make a traditional Filipino dish, so that children can experience Filipino culture.… (más)
