Biografía breve
Though “Haunted Chambers” is her first book, Kidd is not a new writer. She started writing when she was a young girl and sold early works of short fiction while still in college. She earned a degree in Journalism from Marshall University in Huntington, WV, and I was a reporter for about eight years at several small southern newspapers. She then changed careers and entered the information technology field, writing occasional articles for technical journals.

She was initiated into Freemasonry in August 2006, into a Seattle, WA-based Lodge that works under the Honorable Order of American Co-Masonry, American Federation of Human Rights. The Honorable Order is based in Larkspur, CO, and was founded in the US in the early 20th Century. Kidd is a member of the Honorable Order’s Lodge of Research, for which she has written several architectures/research papers and more are in the works.

In March 2008, she was honored by many of her Malecraft Brethren during a ceremony in Machester, England. Her essay, "I am Regular", won the World Award in Internet Lodge No 9659's Short Paper's competition. Internet Lodge is a Lodge in Manchester England that works under the United Grand Lodge of England. It's biannual short papers competition attracts entrants the world over. She was the first Co-Mason and the first woman Freemason to win such an award in a contest sponsored by a Lodge under the UGLE. During the ceremony, she was addressed as "Brother" and she received the award from the then Pro Grand Master of the UGLE, the Most Hon the Marquess of Northampton.

This meticulously researched, lovingly written book should be considered required reading for any member of the Honorable Order of American Co-Masonry.

Bro. Karen has done the Order a tremendous service by piecing together hundreds of documents from around the world, interviewing those still living who took part in significant events, and presenting us with a warts-and-all story of our roots, founders, champions, challenges, mistakes, and triumphs. She brings to life the people who shaped the Order and the particular character of the eras in which they lived. It was a joy to find out more about the people in the portraits in Larkspur, and come to know them as Brothers and individuals.

Only one caveat: at the present time, the Kindle version is a mess, with the footnotes dropped directly into the text at odd intervals. Read the paper version until the Kindle version is updated.

Disclaimer: I am a member of Bro. Karen's Lodge and a friend of hers. (But this is still an amazing work of research, very well presented!)

Well-researched book about women who were initiated into Freemasony before the existence of Co-Masonry and Femalecraft Masonry.

I kept wanting to know more about these women's stories, but the author makes it clear that the challenge of such work is the dearth of detailed records.
