Artists capture both the spirit and the science of the space age in this exquisite volume that tells the story of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Paintings, photographs, and graphics generated by the space program . . . created by such noteworthy artists as Norman Rockwell, Robert McCall, and Robert Rauschenberg . . . are all part of the artistic documentation. Drawings and diagrams are used to show how artists and scientists work together to develop concepts and refine designs.

Robin Kerrod’s narrative accompanies these images and takes the reader from the early days of the American space program through the days of the Apollo moon landings past the interplanetary odysseys of the unmanned space probes and into the deceptively routine days of the Space Shuttle era, filled with launches and space walks, before leaping into the future with space station concepts and manned missions to Mars.

Here science writing and the imaginative power of art combine, giving readers a unique look at America in space.

Highly recommended.

This atlas is an introduction to the solar system, the night sky, stars and galaxies, and exploring space for middle level readers [although any space enthusiast reader will find much to appreciate here]. Each topic presents readers with multiple photographs accompanying the explanatory text, helping the young space enthusiast learn how we have explored space, what we have discovered, and what come next in our future in space.
