The adventures of Buddy Deering and Alura are not as interesting as the adventures of Buck Rogers. Buddy starts out as someone who is willing to make friends with strangers, but later develops a "shoot first ask questions later" mentality.

"Flyin' Jenny", begun in 1939, was probably the first (and only?) comic strip about adventures in aviation with a female as the lead character and adventurer. So it gets points for being ahead of its time; Jenny is definitely a strong and resolute woman. That said, the art and writing on this strip are fairly wooden, and the plots are typical "good Americans vs. the naughty axis powers" stories.
