Interesting mix of politics, romance and anthropology. Nice descriptions of the island environment and traditional island life. A bit too long,. The plot usually moved along nicely except in the junta chapter where the personal and social story bogged down.
I found this particularly passage (p 365) particularly astute and incisive"...but to wander around the village was to see Greek history grimly personified. There were still Anatolian refugees around, one of whom had his eyes gouged out by the Turks. There were men wounded during the civil war, others born with birth defects during the Occupation, There was even an old man down in the harbour who had lost both his feet in Macedonia.
All this Calliope said, had happened in their lifetime And now there was the junta. 'It goes on and on. A national nightmare with no end in sight.' Wow all this in a couple of sentences. Let's get a yay for the European Union.

After a slow start, it really picked up and I quite liked it. The author writes about how she dealt with her mother throughout the initial diagnosis of Alzhemier's and also a little bit about her life growing up in Montreal with Polish parents. It's a very honest and raw book. At times it seems a little too personal (not sure I need to hear about mom's sex life) but overall, I really liked it. She doesn't hide anything nor is she asking for forgiveness for anything she has done/not done.
