A TV series starring Tom Ellis and Lauren German (Netflix, Sep. 2021)

The Devil puts off becoming God.

B (Good).

This is easily the strongest season. Of course it wouldn't be Lucifer if they didn't spend most of the season stalling and backpedaling to try to avoid the previous season's developments. But there aren't enough episodes to slip into a formula, they focus on having fun most of the time, and there are even a number of strong emotional scenes. The ending is disappointing and frustratingly dumb, though.

(Jan. 2023)½

The Devil lives in L.A. and doesn't really solve crimes anymore.

2.5/4 (Okay).

This season focuses on character development. Unfortunately, it's really bad at it, arbitrarily reverting characters to force tension, and stalling to fill up the episode count. They take about eight of ten episodes to end up where they were at the end of last season.

The Devil lives in L.A. and solves crimes.

3/4 (Good).

It backpedals so far it manages to get even more formulaic than the first season. But then near the end, out of nowhere, there are a handful of really great episodes. So... I guess I'm optimistic about season four?½

The Devil lives in L.A. and solves crimes.

3/4 (Good).

Over the course of the season they transition out of the murder-of-the-week formula, throw out the reset button, and focus on telling the story and developing the characters.½

The Devil moves to L.A. and solves crimes.

2.5/4 (Okay).

It's a fun character and a fun premise. But the murder-of-the-week formula is a lazy way to fill time, and the over-arching story is the bare minimum necessary for the show to not be a complete reset-button-style throwback.

This series is entertaining me so much, I love the sharp banter (though sometimes Lucifer is a bit much). My favourite episode was God Johnson, it was so well done. Lucifer's mother was well done and interesting as well and it looks like the actors had a blast playing their roles.
It will be very interesting to see how Maze copes with living with humans and what's going to happen to Dr Linda.

Lucifer joins forces with a detective to solve some cases. He's doing it because he's bored and his attitude rankles Detective Chloe Decker. Add into the mix his demonic bartender, a psychologist and a mixed bad of other characters and you have an interesting set of interactions and characters.

There were times when they tried too hard to camp up Lucifer but overall it was fun and the characters were well done and interesting. I look forward to season 2.
