A terrific resource that gives you the meaning, history, and sometimes pronunciation of place names throughout the Southwest (although it claims to be about "New Mexico" only, there is a lot of overlap in the Southwest). The descriptions tell you where each name comes from - whether it is an obvious definition ("three cottonwoods"), a geological phenomenon, a famous settler, local lore, or a replacement (who knew Deming used to be "New Chicago"?!!). The best part is that it expands upon and fills in the gaps left by a Spanish dictionary, which doesn't include all the words of Indian and/or Mexican origin so often seen.
