Short stories about people in Wales. Eros and thanatos in all of them. Some very realistic, others starting of realistic but suddenly turning into farce or fantasy. Always touching, moving, intriguing. Loved the book.

A very postmodern book, lots of stories dancing around each other. You never know whose story you are reading, the narrator changes, the timelines change, sometimes it's like a simple search for historical facts: who was Mr Vogel, that poor cripple who won a lot of money? Then again you think this is about the walking narrator - but is it? It rambles all over the globe - from Wales to Tasmania. And you never know what is true and what is not, what is reality, what is fancy.
All this sounds like a book I would never finish - but I did, without any hardship. It helps that I have got to know the places mentioned rather well; I do not know if I would have been as enchanted with this book if I did not know and love Wales. But since I do, it gets 4 stars from me. (Not 5: in the end, the rambling becomes a bit too much.

Dystopia. Excellent until the last part of the book. Then Lloyd Jones begins to explain things, so that the magic of your imagination is gone, and it it all starts to get a bit much...½
