Hugh Johnson himself is like a good wine that improves with age - he is 83 and, this edition, the 46th year of publication, is still as good as ever. Margaret Rand has now taken over the reins and is General Editor.

The world's best-selling wine book. Howard D Goldberg, of The New York Times, is quoted on the back cover "Space for only one wine book in your life? This is it.". This book is quite outstanding and every wine lover should have a copy. The food pairing section is tasty.

This review is from: Hugh Johnson on Wine: Good Bits from 55 Years of Scribbling (Hardcover)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme

I am reviewing the book, Hugh Johnson on Wine: Good Bits from 55 Years of Scribbling, by none other than Hugh Johnson. Here are my thoughts:

^^ Detailed scribblings covering 55 years of wine expert Hugh John's delectable career.

^^ Includes lots of articles full of information about the wine industry and the changes over the years.

^^ Hugh Johnson also shares a lot about his own life during these years, which I
think adds to the beauty of this book.

^^ I loved discovering what makes a good wine and why that is so. This is such an in depth book, but at the same time it's written in a genuine, chatty format that makes it both informative and fun to read.

^^ Sprinkled through are delightful drawings that add to this book's charm.

^^ Would make a lovely gift for wine fans, and a great coffee table book.

Overall:
Hugh Johnson certainly knows his wine, and with 55 Years of Scribbling this book is full to the brim with my favourite tipple. Definitely a must for a wine-tasting connoisseur and a Hugh Johnson fan.

This review is from: Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2017 (Hardcover)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme

I am reviewing the book, Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2017 by Hugh Johnson. Here are my thoughts:

^^ This is a comprehensive book that shows quick reference vintage charts on the front inside covers and on the back inside covers an interesting list of back-label laboratory analysis and temperature levels for different wines can be found.

^^ This covers everything from how to use the book, grape varieties to wines found by region.

^^ I love t
he 'if you like this type of wine, you must try this one...' ideas.

^^ As for the look and appeal of this book, the cover is a delectable shiny, gold and burgundy wine colour, of which is really appealing. Maybe it's because it is the 40th anniversary edition? (The picture here does not do it justice).

Overall: A great pocket sized book to pop in your bag (or pocket) when dining out and trying new wines. Also a good reference book in order to get an idea if you are going to like a particular wine, especially when some years are pricier, yet better than others. I've learnt a lot from this book and as a wine lover, I have branched out and tried many different wines than I normally do. I particularly love Spanish wine so those pages are well thumbed... Can you tell I love my wine?

I purchase this exceptional, comprehensive wine guide every year. Johnson organizes the guide by country and lists the names of the most reliable producers for each specific region. If you love wine, are curious and searching for the best producers - this is indispensable!

A wonderful book for the beginning gardener (ornamental plants, not vegies), which briefly covers almost every topic of interest about decorative plants, gardening and landscape design and the history of gardening. The writing is a pleasure to read. There are other books which go into much more depth on particular aspects of gardening, but this one is the most comprehensive introduction I'm aware of.

50. A loan exhibition which explored the symbolic, sacred and secular importance of wine and wine drinking from antiquity to the present day, illustrated with hundreds of pictures of wine accouterments, wine-related art, and wine-making technology. Hugh Johnson contributes an essay on the history of wine production and enjoyment; Dora Janson writes on the symbolic importance of wine and the vine, and David McFadden explores the history of wine-related design. A pleasing oenological ramble.

Useful in its time, but 25 years later, as these kind of books will, it has become dated. However, the information on second bottlings in France is still invaluable.
