I'll be honest and admit that the gloriously kitschy cover art of this book is what initially made me interested in reading it. As for the contents, while it's not the most sparkling prose I've ever read, Jennings does give you a systematic examination of the forces that created the Texans' military system, a combination of limited resources, the American militia tradition, and the availability of revolver pistols, before giving you a catalogue of military actions involving Texas. I will note that this work is a little slighter than the subtitle suggests, as 90% of this work deals with conflicts involving Mexico, or the First Nations, with one chapter dealing with the experience of the late unpleasantness of the 1860s. At that point the work peters out, as the Texas Rangers begin to make their formal turn into being a police force.… (más)
