I appreciated the feminist bent in these stories, and that they were all loosely (some more than others) based on a traditional tale. Like all anthologies though, some were stronger than others.

The first and last stories, Hunting Monsters and The Ninety-Ninth Bride, were the ones that really shone in the collection, and the ones I loved. The ones in the middle, while enjoyable, didn't leave as large an impression on me.

An amazing collection of six subverted fairy tales, with an essay by each author about what influenced the story, and an author interview. The story by S.L. Huang (who is eligible for a 2015 Campbell) made me want to pick up her novels.

My favorite story was "In Her Head, In Her Eyes" by Yukimi Ogawa--it was eerie, terrifying, and the writing leaped off the page. I give this story five stars and might well nominate it for a Hugo.

All the stories are available to read for free on the Book Smugglers website.… (más)

Retold: Six Fairytales Reimagined edited by The Book Smugglers Ana Grilo and Thea James.

"The notion of a universality of human experience is a confidence trick and the notion of a universality of female experience is a clever confidence trick."
-Angela Carter

If she was with us Angela Carter would have celebrated her 75th birthday in 2015, so to mark the occasion Penguin Classics has published The Bloody Chamber: And Other Stories: 75th-Anniversary Edition her landmark re-imagining of the fairy-tale. Another great way to mark the anniversary year of her birth would be to plunge into these marvelous stories Retold: Six Fairytales Reimagined a clever and confident collection written and edited by women worthy of being called Angela Carter's literary daughters and heirs. The stories and authors in the collection include Hunting Monsters by S.L. Huang, In Her Head, In Her Eyes by Yukimi Ogawa, Mrs. Yaga by Michal Wojcik, The Mussel Eater by Octavia Cade, The Astronomer Who Met The North Wind by Kate Hall and The 99th Bride by Catherine F. King. Like Carter's classic set of tales this collection re-imagines stories that echo 'The Brothers Grimm', 'Hans Christian Andersen', 'The Thousand and One Nights' and even has a dash of Sci-Fi.

The editors have generously included a look at what inspired each story as well as separate chats with each author.

A collection of articles/blog posts reviewing some of the most important works of the year (books, movies, etc.) and/or discussing broader trends, mainly around diversity, representation, or the lack thereof. I’d read a fair number of them before, but the collection was interesting for painting a picture of a genre (or genres!) in transition and a fair amount of turmoil, but in a hopeful way.
