An adequate introduction to the early history of U.S. involvement with the Republic of Vietnam under President Diệm, though lacking much of the depth and insight that made Jacobs' earlier work America's Miracle Man in Vietnam a 5-star title in my opinion.
If you are only going to read a single volume on the beginnings of U.S. intervention in South Vietnam, you can't do much better than America's Miracle Man in Vietnam. All aspects surrounding America's attempts at nation-building in concert and conflict with President Diệm are laid out in painstaking detail, yet accessible prose. As hinted at by the subtitle, particular attention is given to the biases of early political and religious stakeholders on the American home front, who are, perhaps mercifully, consigned to the footnotes of most Vietnam War histories.… (más)
