Lei è una dei sopravvissuti agli esperimenti del dottor Mengele. Lui è un ex nazista accusato di complicità nell'omicidio di 300 mila persone. Si sono incontrati nel 2015 e un gesto della donna ha sorpreso tutti.

Nel 1962 la giustizia tedesca stabilì che coloro che avevano ucciso sotto l'influenza della propaganda nazista non potevano essere considerati colpevoli di omicidio. Ma nel 2011 il caso dell’aguzzino del campo di Sobibor, condannato a oltre 70 anni dagli avvenimenti, ha ribaltato l’interpretazione della legge penale e ha portato al processo di Oskar Groening il “contabile di Auschwitz”. Durante il processo, la testimone Eva Kor, una delle sopravvissute ad Auschwitz, perdona l’imputato “per aver avuto la decenza di ammettere le proprie responsabilità”. La storia della sopravvissuta ad Auschwitz Birkenau Eva Mozes Kor. Deportata dall'Ungheria nel 1944, fu sottoposta insieme alla sorella gemella agli esperimenti di Mengele. Tra i pochi bambini sopravvissuti, persa la sorella alcuni anni dopo la liberazione per le conseguenze riportate dopo la prigionia, ebbe il coraggio di affrontare a viso aperto uno dei medici nazisti del campo 50 anni dopo e di concedergli personalmente il perdono dopo che questi aveva ammesso pubblicamente le proprie responsabilità storiche.… (más)

Originally, the four volumes of The Making of Modern London were the basis of a Thames TV Documentary (hence the secondary author, film maker Steve Humphries) and were published as four separate books. It covers the period of the late Victorians but comes up through the histories of the building of the railways, the massive London Docks and the slums, to the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth and the decline of the British Empire. London suffered immensely during the wars and to the blight of poverty, the Blitz of Hitler’s bombers added homeless thousands, separated families and left just bombed, fire-scorched rubble where once whole communities lived.

The slow recovery, the swing to the Labour Party and with the slow introduction of better health-care and decent housing London then recovered yet again and boomed into the ‘swinging sixties’ and consumerism of the 70s.

This is a well written and intimate story of London, from villages and open fields to the city that still thrills and charms its visitors and inhabitants. As Dr. Johnson once remarked, London is life … and this book is one of its great autobiographies.… (más)
