Biografía breve
Inspired by her boy's pint sized cowboy boots, Hoboken, New Jersey writer Jan Huling sat down and came up with this wild and wacky retelling of the classic story of Puss in Boots. Her illustrator husband Phil’s sunny landscapes and long, lean characters provide the perfect compliment for the book’s southern drawls and sassy humor. Together, Jan & Phil have created a rootin’-tootin’ ride through a fairy tale Texas that’s sure to be a favorite of kids and their parents alike!

Jan Huling uses similes to compare the animal to a horrible sounding instrument. Even though they may have sounded terrible, they were still a band and still tried to make it to New Orleans. Then, they found a cabin and ran the thieves out, so they claimed the cabin and decided to retire there instead.

What a fun and creative retelling of the traditional story of Puss in Boots. This version is set in Texas and gives the southern vibe to it. As I was reading the text, I had to read it in an southern accent including the word, "Y'all". It made me laugh because you have to talk southern while reading a southern book. This book is interesting and quite funny, but i may be difficult for children to understand the southern slang if they aren't from the south. As I picked up this book, I imagine Puss in Boots from Shrek with big eyes. But as I was reading the illustrations were set in Texas and the Cat looked nothing like the classic Puss in Boots. It can teach kids that you can always change the classic fairy tales into anything you want.… (más)

A western version of Puss in Boots that takes place in Texas where Puss makes a man rich. Puss originally belonged to Dan’s father who passed away. After his father’s death, Dan took Puss as the last thing he received from his father. Dan and Puss set out on the road with no destination in mind. As days grew long Dan grew weary from his travels and began making plans to cook Puss for some chili. Puss heard the plans for his future and told Dan he had a better plan saying all he needed were cowboy boots and a sack. Once Puss has his boots he sets out and catches a turkey and a possum in his sack. Bringing these gifts to Mr. Patoot, a big oilman in Texas. Puss tells Mr. Patoot the gifts are from Dan, “the biggest, the richest, and the most powerful rancher of the Lone Star State.” Puss becomes well known with Mr. Patoot and he looks forward to seeing Puss with the gifts every so often. One-day Puss’s plan goes into full force when he tells Dan to pretend he is drowning as Mr. Patoot’s limo passes by. Mr. Patoot stops to save Dan and they ride off in the limo. Mr. Patoot and Dan pass cattle and oil rigs, which Puss has told the workers to say that Dan owns. Their last stop would be a big ranch house which Dan also owns with twisted help from Puss. The men all enjoy bar-be-que and have a good time Dan’s nice house. Puss does not party with them, instead he takes off his boots and relaxes, his job was done. The language was very western in the text since it is taking place in Texas. Also, the illustrations portray hot, dry Texas during a summer.… (más)

I enjoyed the southern drawl that the story is told in. Farmer Brown was going to kill Ol' Bloo Donkey because he was getting too old to world. He wouldn't have that so he ran away. Ol' Bloo Donkey decided to go down to New Orleans to become a singer and finds some friends along the way. They stumble upon a cabin occupied with thieves. They decide to perform for them but cause a ruckus outside which scared them away. One thief went back to the cabin and his world was turned upside down when he woke up the animals. With the thieves gone, they all decided to retire to the cabin in the woods.
This was my favorite book that I have read all semester. I loved the illustrations and the accents of the animals. This was such a creative and fun book. I shared it with my mom and we had fun with the accents. She loved it as well.
