The most interesting thing about this book is the depiction of the Kl Klux Klan in Missouri during the 1920's. The story is heavily researched and reflects much of the thinking and culture of mid-Missouri during the 1920's. The Thompson family is the primary focus of the book due to the fact that the author was able to interview one of the descendants. Those interviews are interspersed between the telling of the story of the way families were categorized as either "for" or "against" the Klan. Strangely, the Klan at this time and in this place was not mainly focused on race, but rather Catholics and anyone of "immoral" character. Both the father of the Thompson and the father of the Crimson family were killed during this time of hard ship, fear, and general isolation of the location.
