Each of the three main models - psychodynamic, behavioural and humanistic - of counselling are examined in this book, which gives an overview of their origins, theoretical bases and the development of various counselling approaches which grew from them. The practical element of the title comes from the description of how each of the approaches works within the counselling relationship and how they are experienced by both counsellor and client.

There is a chapter on how group counselling can work in each approach and a chapter on how techniques from the different approaches can be used in an eclectic or integrative way.

The author explained each of the approaches clearly and succinctly, as befits an introductory/intermediate book. An excellent volume if you want to compare the different counselling approaches with each other.
