I loved Village of Salt and Sorrow so much. When reading you can hear the murmur of the waves and the song of the sea. The atmosphere of the book is very special as you stroll in a small Scottish Fisherman village. Laura Holt created an incredible family drama drawing its source in Celtic folklore and selkie legend.

It is said that Loch Moira was once the home to a flock of selkies, sequestered and enslaved by men with the help of a Sea Witch. Many centuries later , Nova McIntosh and her family still pay the price of their ancestor’s treason towards the Sea’s Daughters.

As the narrative evolves, we follow not one, but two stories : the one of Nova McIntosh, younger woman of the McIntosh Sea Witches, and the one of Undine, one of the kidnapped selkies. Even if their stories take place centuries apart, they are undeniably linked by the Sea.

Laura Holt is an amazing storyteller. Her novel Village of Salt and Sorrow is a declaration of love to the sea and its oldest legends. It is a deep and poetic story about survival and the strength of family.
