Absent another translation of “The Meditations,” I cannot speak to the accuracy of the interpretation but can say it was an easy read. The philosophical bent of the “Meditations” was reminiscent of the U. S. founding documents, which makes sense since Washington, Jefferson, Adams…etc. were all well schooled in classic philosophy and languages. What was more fascinating however was seeing that something written nearly 2000 years ago is still relevant today, testifying to the fact that human nature hasn’t changed a wit since we first stood up in the tall grass.
A good read and a valuable reference book for anyone to own and study. The introduction was also easy to read and informative. My one complaint (more an observation really) is that the language of the translation seemed a little too contemporary for my taste. If you’re picking up a book on the meditations of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, you’re smart enough to understand literal translations with footnotes.
I am now tempted to find yet another translation and compare.
