As a former student of Robert Lopez, I profoundly respect him, but I feel bound to say that though Lopez and others may have demonstrated Pienne was mistaken on the contunity of economic ties between Gaul and Byzantium, I think in a broader cultural sense, PIrenne was right that the Islamic conquest made a decisive break in the hitherto broadly unified Mediterranean cultural world.
