Sobre El Autor

Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton, Ga., on December 9, 1848. Deserted by his father at an early age, Harris dropped out of school and began working as a literary apprentice to help his mother make ends meet. Soon after, he was writing humorous pieces for several Georgia newspapers and in mostrar más 1876, Harris joined the Staff of the Atlanta Constitution as an editor. Harris is best remembered for writing the Uncle Remus stories. Based on traditional African tales and folklore, the stories feature animal characters, such as Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox, who are endowed with human characteristics. Some of the Uncle Remus titles include Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings, Night with Uncle Remus, Uncle Remus and His Friends, and Uncle Remus and the Little Boy. After his death on July 3, 1908, Harris's home in Atlanta's West End was preserved as a museum called Wren's Nest. The museum got its name from a family of wrens that were found nesting in Harris's rickety old wooden mailbox. (Bowker Author Biography) mostrar menos

I sought out this collection after reading a discussion thread not long ago about the most memorable/traumatizing short stories assigned by high school English teachers. Only 21 stories are included here, and they are limited to those of only American origin, but I thought it was a reasonably well-rounded collection. They range from the humorous and the delightfully disturbing to the incomprehensible ("The Call of Cthulhu") and the weirdly twisted, and I limited my reading to no more than a single story each day to allow more time to ruminate.… (más)

This edition is modernized so you are not wrestling with a possibly unfamiliar dialect.

Trickster tales require a bit of caution, much like Tricksters themselves. Pre-read and decide if this is for you or edit as you read aloud.

This book uses the word “stupid”, and mentions Brer Rabbit getting his comeuppance by becoming a stew or being hanged.

Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of black American folktales compiled and adapted by
Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction Atlanta, and he produced seven
Uncle Remus books. He wrote these stories to represent the struggle in the Southern United States, and more specifically in the plantations.
He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which represented
the voice of the narrators and their subculture. For this choice of framing, his collection has encountered controversy.
