Let me point out first of all that this is not my usual fare of crime fiction.

I find that I can almost categorise Sophie Green's books as "comfort reads", realistic plots, focussed on life in Australian suburbs, women helping women cope with living quite ordinary lives, facing quite ordinary problems.

Mostly the characters in these books are verging on elderly and leading the sort of lives I see around me. The author seems to be able to focus on the nub of problems and suggest feel-good solutions.… (más)

Bellbird River is a small town in the dusty heart of nowhere, a place where every knows everyone else and crime is non-existent. For a group of residents their choir is everything, a disparate group of individuals who perform an eclectic mix of songs and who represent the town. Into the choir come a new group of women, Alex - a single mother, Gabrielle - a opera singer recovering from a failed operation, Debbie - hiding from the world, Janine - consumed by guilt and Victoria - abandoned and angry, through friendship they leant to progress.
This book belongs to a very overcrowded and cliched genre but I really enjoyed it. The setting in the late 1990s is unusual and I liked the fact that there is the claustrophobia of isolated country life to content with. At it's heart this is a feel-good novel and sometimes that is exactly what I want to read - not too demanding, not too challenging, just relaxingly pleasant.

A lovely book to immerse yourself in at any time.

Returning home to Australia after a failed marriage in the United States, Cynthia is struggling to find her true worth and to reconnect with her daughter and family. Talked into joining the Sunshine Gardening Society, she discovers that there is a lot more to gardening than separating the weeds from the plants. While making gardens of those in need into a place of beauty, the ladies of the society also loosen and remove the weeds of the soul and make life a beautiful place both inside and out.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book and have been searching library shelves for more books from this wonderful author.
