The story is abridged to fit the length, the format, and the intended audience of children 8 and up, but it retains the meat of the story. I love the clean artwork that makes the images easy to understand but also enables them to be colored in by the reader. What a great way to further immerse yourself in the story, express your creativity, or practice for a career in comics!

Note: I received a digital galley of this book through NetGalley.

Very light treatment of the subject, leaving out significant details. Good as a beginner's guide to English history.

May be good for Pony Club or horse people interested in learning a bit, but it's NOT suitable for medical studies or even reinforcing anatomy. The 30 plates are done well, but don't go into any detail, eg the hock is labeled as "tarsal bones" instead of individual bones and their shapes and contours.

I've found this one very detailed and hard to color.

More than just a book of illustrations, this Dover book has some information on horse breeds, anatomy, and how to train and take care of a horse.

This Dover book has a limit of 6 on the number of illustrations that you may use in any one work. The designs are somewhat intricate and would not necessarily be useful for simple illustrations of animals without some work by the reader.

As with many of these Dover Coloring Books, they are beautiful line drawings that are great to use for all sorts of craft applications. I have used them for applique patterns for quilts and am hoping to use them for mosaics as well.
