Book 4, it might help to read the previous books to connect with Grant and Ruby as well as understand the writing style. Nonetheless, the story itself can be read as a standalone. Grant and Ruby investigate suspicious deaths at a hospital and can only rely on patient Emma to help with the answers. There are various character perspectives so while the story is predominantly written in the third person with every other chapter featuring a first-person narrative, this can initially make the reading jarring. Nonetheless, this is a fast-paced murder mystery.

This was a short story and a fun read.

Jared and Nalini are a newlywed couple who have it all, including dark pasts and secrets they have kept from each other. But those secrets don't stay hidden long when he meets Vanessa, the strange woman who stands peering at their window each day. It's hard to say too much without giving it all away but it reminded me a bit of an old movie I saw many years ago called Diabolique.

Twenty-five years ago David Grant was instrumental in capturing the serial killer Travis, who is now terminally ill. But a death has his hallmarks and his DNA. D.I. Grant and his team with the help of student Ruby Silver, a criminal profiler, investigate the new deaths.
An entertaining crime story. A good start to a new series with its likeable characters.
