The Who Was books are always great overviews of our world's most influential people. This one about Stephen Hawking goes over his life, his disabilities, and most importantly, his massive contributions to the scientific community. Readers will be able to see that no matter who you are, whether you have a disability or not, you can do great things!

I learned a lot from this slender volume -- what a fascinating human being, and what an immense impact he had in his short life. Well written, moves right along.

No one ever thought George Washington Carver would ever succeed in life. He proved them wrong. He graduated from college, became a professor and an inventor along with many other accomplishments. This book is part of the "Who Was" series.

I knew this was written for a much younger age group when I picked it up at the library book sale and I already knew a bit about Bruce Lee, but I figured it was a $2.00 per bag sale and the book would help fill up a sack of books.

I'm not sure what age range this is recommended for. Maybe ages 8-9? Could be higher or lower depending on the reading skills and/or the interest in the subject matter.

I almost gave up on it in the beginning section "Who Was Bruce Lee?" when it had sentences like "What strength Bruce had!", "What speed Bruce had!", and "What power Bruce had!" (Not that I don't agree--and each of these sentences was prefaced with a short story about something Bruce had done that demonstrated this attribute.)

I am glad I pressed on. I did learn a few things about Bruce Lee that I hadn't realized before. I hadn't realized he studied philosophy. I hadn't realized that he had many books. I hadn't realized that he had combined a bunch of different disciplines to create Jeet Kun Do (or that some call him the father of modern MMA).

I also never realized he'd had a back injury that he had to come back from.

I did find it a bit confusing that his movies had different titles in Chinese and English.½

Luke Bryan always loved country music and wanted to be a performer. Learn when and where he was born and what obstacles he has to overcome to be the superstar that he is today.
This book is recommended for grades kindergarten to third grade. The reference aids and age appropriate vocabulary make it a good early reference book. It could be used as a part of an early research assignment or an introduction to the biography genre.

Fans of country music and especially Miranda Lambert gain an interesting glimpse into her background and are inspired to follow their own dreams.

Kids ages 4 to 7 who adore Miranda Lambert (or those who want to get to know more about her) will find exactly what they're looking for in these pages. The book starts out with a table of contents, which makes it easy to quickly find information even later on. The first two-page spread begins with energy and makes at exciting start to who Miranda is and the exciting moment she became well known. From there, the different stages of her life are explored, starting with her as a young girl and her family. The important moments of her career are highlighted, and at the end, a more personal view is taken as her other interest, such as barrel racing and her love for animals is hit upon. There's is a timeline on the last pages to make the high points of her life clear, and all of this is followed with a glossary, index and website address where the reader can learn even more.

Real life photos make every page bold and colorful. Miranda is presented in different settings, and with the photos, small bubbles with more interesting tidbits are thrown in. The text is very fitting to the age group and written in a way which grabs the reader and pulls them in...not dry in any way.

It's a great book for kids to learn more about a popular country singer and see how she went from a normal little girl to a star.

I received a complimentary copy and found it informative and just right for the age group, so I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.

A early reader biography about Bruno Mars. Age appropriate vocabulary and simple sentences make this a good early reader however the content is lacking. Book only briefly touches on early life and seems to be heavy on career. It would be better to have some balance of early life, career, and non career information such as charity work or hobbies. Book includes index, glossary, timeline, and table of contents.

The reason i chose this book is because i have had it in my closet for ,well 2 years and i haven't read it all yet. This book is a exhilarating adventure about the 2016 year of sports. It has sports from basketball to sports that you would never even think about having. It's has pages after pages about sports that you like, and even the awards given in that year to a person for that sport. My favorite thing about this book is that it doesn't only focus on the famous superstars. The book focuses on pretty much all players. Also this book has many facts about coaches and supporters. Also has the training and significance about the players and what they do best.
My opinion on this book is very good. I love all the information that is given. Most importantly on how people do what they do best. I gave the book a 4 and on half stars. There is no reason for this it's what the book deserves. The good thing about the book is that it ducats you on the history players and how and what the sport is today. Overall one of the best book I've read in a while . Just a couple years late.½

This is a good book for 3rd grade read along. Before each chapter you could discuss the vocab words and then read a chapter each day and have an after project or assignment.

This was a good book and a quick read. I would use it in the classroom as an example of breaking barriers and achieving your dreams even when faced with tough obstacles. Roberto was also a good example of giving back to the world, he was more than a baseball player, he was a humanitarian.

I really liked this book! I think that the author did a great job of getting the central message across which is that Roberto Clemente worked hard to get to where he is and is well-respected and honored to this day.One thing that I liked about this book was that in the beginning it included an introduction from the viewpoint of Roberto Clemente. I found it intriguing to read an introduction from a man who was not alive, and think that this introduction truly pulls readers into the story and gets them interested into Roberto Clemente's life (it's not a boring introduction). I also liked how throughout the book, important words were bolded to emphasize that they were an important part of Roberto Clemente's life. For example, the word, "injustice" is bolded to emphasize the fact that Roberto Clemente did not appreciate injustice and that it bothered him. Another thing that I liked about this book i that it highlighted many different aspects of Roberto Clemente's life and not just his baseball career, which is what he is most known for. For example, the book includes the fact that Roberto married a woman named Vera and that they had three sons together.

Review from goodreads.com:
I got this free from ALA, and since I didn't know much about Jesse Owens I decided to read it. It's a quick kid's book. The bits about race stats were boring to me, but like I said, it's a quick read.

The
World of Nascar Fantastic Finishes: Nascar’s Great Races
By Jim Gigliotti

This was a very informative book about Nascar. I am not a fan, however, I learned quite a lot about the sport. The first race was in 1950 by the founder Bill France Sr. in Daytona Beach Florida. The first race was won by a mere 24 inches. An interesting point I learned was style made up much of the race. The winner of the race may not bring as much to the table as the style and maneuvering ability of the driver. Nascar racing is an subjective sport. Strategy would be a key point to this book. Strategy could be brought to the classroom by delving into individual student interests. Vocabulary is an important key for understanding this book. Different tracks and winners were featured on individual pages along with statistics and colorful pictures featuring some of the most memorable events. A timeline at the back of the book provided some interesting facts that went along with the thirty-two page book.
It appears while reading the book that Nascar racing could also be considered Americas sport along with football. Nascar racing is a sport of close calls and tremendous action. It appears that once one has been bitten by the Nacar racing bug they are hooked for life.
This book could be used as a teaching tool. One could incorporate math and language activities. If student interest levels are there the information learned by students could be substantial.
