The historical novel Glenddich Inn by Alain Geik is set in Northeast America in 1915-1919. While World War I takes it toll, the battlefield looks far away from a U.S. perspective. The Morrison and Townsend families in Boston treasure new inventions like the car, motorcycle, and first radio transmissions. The inn itself is not the center court of the novel. After a German torpedo sinks the brand new ocean liner, the RMS Lusitania, war is coming at the families' doorstep. While Margaret's love for making radio is muted, because of having to turn in the electronica for use in the war, brother Byron is considering a career switch from being a sports journalist to drive an ambulance through western Europe and help war victims. Love affairs, patriotism, the first signs of an overheated stock exchange, war propaganda, espionage as well as brutal attacks by U-Boats on the American east coast lead the reader through the war years. The massive outbreak of influenza ultimately causes more victims than the war. Will the armistice reached in Europe bring peace again to the Boston families? What moral choices would you make?
Geik is gifted with a well of words, the ability to bring history alive and paint his characters in full-colour.
