There is not a lot of academic minutiae in here. It was written by someone who grew up in this culture and then left. This book is good to give you an idea of what life is like as lived by the average person in the Amish community where the author grew up. If you are looking for some detailed analysis about Anabaptist movements or something Jerry Springeresque, keep looking.

This book makes more sense after reading the other book by the same author. Otherwise, it just reads like her rationalisation why falling in love with someone is a good reason to leave everything. She hints at other reasons why she left, but keeps coming back to the same reason. The book would better be put into the category of 'things we do for love' rather than anything regarding Amish life. Read if you are interested in autobiographies, love stories, and adapting to other cultures. Skip if it's Amish society you're looking for.… (más)
