An adoption story in which the (single) mother and the child do not look alike. A nice jumping off point for discussion about how families come in a variety of forms . . . and that's okay.

Families are not just who you are biologically related to, a family is made up of people that care for you and you care for them. They pick you up when you are down. They take care of you not because you need it but because they want to. The puppy in this book seems to be going through adoption and ends up with a wonderful mom. They learn together how to be a family. The mom says it doesn't matter that we don't look alike, families come in all different forms. This book tells it perfectly, families are made up of all kinds of combinations and no one should feel their family is wrong.… (más)

I like this book because it can be very relatable to young kids. Although the characters are unrealistic, because they are animals, they are very well thought out. For example, The mom is a cat and the son is a dog. The two characters go to a park where there is another set of characters. However, these characters are both cats in their family. The author successfully uses animals in the book as the characters to bring the lesson of diversity within a family into the story. I think the writing is engaging and could be very engaging to certain audiences who can relate. The book begins with the dog coming to his new home to live with his new mom, the cat. This can relate to students who have had to move to different homes or different families and help them understand that they are not alone in this.… (más)
