Die Figur des Taowu ist ein mystisches chinesisches Monster mit dem Hang zum Bösen, das zuletzt von Historikern und Schriftstellern benutzt wurde, um das gewaltätige Schicksal der utopischen Moderne Chinas zu beschreiben. Die Publikation fragt nach der Rolle der systematischen und strukturellen Gewaltanwendung in der Moderne und ihrer künstlerischen Darstellung. Die Figur des Monsters ist weiter Ausgangspunkt, um die gegenwärtige weltweite Krise sozialer Vorstellungswelten festzuhalten.

Departing from the figure of the Taowu, a Chinese mythological monster of evil inclination used recently by histo- rians and writers to symbolize the violent fate of Chinese utopian modernity, this publication interrogates the role of systemic and structural violence in the making of modernity and its artistic representations, and uses the monster as a vantage point to capture global dimensions of the current crisis of social imaginaries.
