An all-purpose baking bible that I would hugely recommend to beginners. Useful to have in the kitchen, especially if you're a non-baker... Since it's pretty basic. It didn't add much to what I already know, but that's because I should know it (since I'm a baker). It uses volume measurements, which is not ideal for me.

As good as the all purpose bread baking cookbook. A chocolate cookie to die for!

Love this cookbook! After checking it out for 9 weeks at the library, I finally bought a used copy online. This book is great. It's interesting and very helpful when you are trying to do all of your baking from scratch with whole grains.

Not everything I have made has been wonderful, but I'm trying to adapt to an altitude of 8500 feet instead of sea level. I've made tortillas and cookies and breads. I keep revising and improvising on recipes but I feel comforted knowing I have a decent guide to rely on.

This is an amazing baking cookbook. It is unlike most other baking cookbooks, because it not only has recipes, it also teaches you why certain methods are used, i.e., how to bake. For example, it explains why it's important to put cheese into the crust of a quiche before adding other ingredients. It also goes into detail about what certain baked dishes are, as in, what the differences are between a crisp, a cobbler, and a buckle. Besides basic bread and dessert recipes, it includes some unusual ones, too, like "Feaux-Reos," for those who'd rather bake their own Oreos than by them, and hot pockets. It also has the most amazing banana bread recipe I've ever tasted. I love this cookbook!

Oh, yeah, make delicious goodies that are healthier than the white-flour versions! I have made all of the scone recipes in this book, many of the muffins, the basic pizza crust and sandwich bread, and others which I cannot remember. Every single recipe was accurate and needed no adjustments, other than to my specific oven. I highly recommend following this book's suggestion to weigh ingredients rather than measuring by volume: this tip alone has vastly improved all of my baking!

This is easily my favorite cookie (and brownie, biscotti, etc.) book.

There are a ton of wonderful recipes, with lots of variations, and there is an absolute ton of general baking information that you can use in all kinds of baking.

This is another cookbook I've had for ages but have barely made any of the recipes in it. I really like the layout--there aren't many photos, just a few color inserts, but the sheer amount of recipes makes up for it. This is definitely like a baking bible. I especially like that they list both volume and weight measurements for all recipes.

As with all my cookbook reviews, I'll update as I cook from this!

Gingerbread Pancakes -- 4 stars
These have really good flavor, but I found them a touch on the dry side. The batter was really thick, so if it's like that in the future I'll add a bit more buttermilk. Or just serve them with lots of butter on top. These would also be great with a sweet topping since they're more on the savory side (I wish I had some maple syrup!)

The best cookbook for bakers... it has everything you could need to know about pie making (this section is especially wonderful!!) I'd highly recommend it as a gift book or for any serious baker. If you are like me and don't indulge in buying lots of cookbooks this is one to keep on hand! (and their catalogs and products are the best... I wouldn't bake without their flours... and no I don't get paid to say that!)

This is probably pretty obvious but too many of these recipes are not vegan for me to bother. However, the bread section is pretty awesome and has a lot of great recipes to try.

I was expecting their cookbook to be as good as their flour; it's not. It's a good, dependable baking book, but isn't very original or innovative. Would be good for beginning bakers.

One of my new favorite baking books. Easy instructions, a little bit of everything in here. I want to try to make crackers for our annual Christmas party first. I checked this one out from my library -- I will certainly be buying a copy soon!

This is a fascinating cookbook to read, although with over 400 recipes eventually I was tired of all the variations and varieties. However, I do admit that is not really the point as a cookbook is to cook from, not to read, and chances are, if you are looking for any type of cookie, you will find what you want here. I especially was intrigued by the King Arthur approach to the essential American cookies, which offered recipes to encompass every taste from Chewy to Crisp and in-between; including Chocolate Chip, Sugar Cookies, Brownies, and Biscotti (although the variations on that cookie ran between Italian and American styles). Frankly, I probably will never care enough to make their version of Oreos or Whoopie Pies (that is what grocery stores are for in my estimation), but those sorts of recipes are included too for the avid do-it-yourselfer.

This definitely is a great resource book also as it has all sorts of charts, tips and "how-to's" scattered throughout the pages. For instance, we used their staggered pan layout for making chocolate chip cookies to fit more on the sheet ... and it worked like a charm. Now, why didn't I think of that? Helpful illustrations walk the reader through techniques that may be difficult to understand from the written word alone. An ending section on ingredients not only has all the basic information but answers questions such as "What's the difference between an extract, an oil, and a flavor?" or "What if I run out of baking powder?"

So the bottom line is, do I like this cookbook enough to buy it? Yes. In fact, I did buy it. I am going to work my way through all the variations of the essential cookies and the tips and hints are practical enough to make this book a worthwhile investment.

Just the book I need to help me make great baked goods with our fresh ground flour. We have tried many recipes from this book and enjoyed them all. Lots of tips on using whole grains and the baking process. Some of our favorites are the Multi grain Snickerdoodles, gingerbread, double fudge brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

This is my favorite book on cooking and is one of my favorite books of all kinds!

It is much more than a cookbook; it's a course in baking. Rather than simply presenting recipes, it presents an approach to developing one's own recipes. It is very open-ended, suggesting approximate quantities and types of alternative ingredients and the considerations involved in choosing different ingredients or cooking techniques in preparing a particular type of baked product, but in most cases it does not present a formula for producing any exact result.

One might think from its lack of specifics that it is not a book for beginners, but I disagree -- I think it is the ideal book for beginners. By presenting open ended recipes, providing authoritative discussions on food chemistry and food science, and by encouraging experimentation, it provides the tools for a cook at any level of expertise to experience the greatest joy of cooking, which is to produce a unique, personal work of art at the table.

At its price, this makes a great gift.

Not one recipe in this cookbook has ever failed me. I don't remember where I acquired it, but King Arthur Flour made a lifelong friend of me with this collection of recipes.
