Set mainly in WWII Britain, this book traces the exceptional friendship between Danny, a white boy who has a supportive family, and Forest, a half-black boy whose mother is, to put it mildly, uncaring. The upheaval and tragedy of wartime Britain, with the constant threat of bombing and overall misery, is evoked with skill, as is the boys’-eye view of the world. Although the writing style seemed a little unpolished to me, the author made up for that in verve and dash. The characters were clearly rendered and believable, particularly Danny and Forest. Besides being a buddy story, this novel also develops the theme of ‘what goes around, comes around’ in a highly satisfying manner.… (más)
