I met Alcyon Fleck at General Conference in Toronto and was very taken by her as a person and her twenty-year mission of building homes for orphans in third world countries.

This book is about Oscar who was born into a large close-knit family high in the mountains of either Mexico or a Central American country. His father had many brothers and they had a large farm and ranch. Rebels began to try to overthrow the government and a huge uprising occurred. When Oscar was 4 or 5, the father kept finding butchered cows. He went to the government for help but they offered no assistance. One day the leader of the rebels came and strongly encouraged the father and uncles to join their cause, which they do.

They train for a year, then return to bring their families to the mountains. Oscar is drawn into the fighting but eventually comes to live in one of the orphanages Alcyon started.
