First, I LOVE baseball and actually read this on the way home from a Seattle Mariner game, so this book was right up my alley, topic-wise! That being said, I thought it was only okay. The book uses free-verse poems from 20+ perspectives in order to tell the story of a baseball tragedy. Luke "the Wizard" is destined to become a sports hero; he's the stuff that sports legends are made of! That is, until he's hit in the face by an opposing team, losing his eyesight in one eye. The book has several parts, from pre-game, to the incident, to the aftermath.

Because it's told from SO MANY perspectives, it might be hard to follow. I'm not sure if the free verse adds much in the sense of style, mood, readability, etc. The plot was intense, but a bit predictable. It would be a good book for someone interested in sports, and it would be easier to keep all of the characters straight if the reader knows enough about baseball; it helps to think of positions and keep narrators organized that way instead of names. For example, one character is name Dawson and one is Dawkins. I kept getting confused at first, but then I decided to use their team/position to help me differentiate them as I read.

Luke Wallace suffers a major injury. The novel uncovers how he heals and how it affects the people around him. Luke Wallace is inured playing his favorite sport. Kyle Dawkins was responsible for Luke's injury. Andy Keller is conflicted because he is starting now. Overall I think this book was in the middle. It was alright because it was Baseball. I didn't like it because there is to many characters. I dis liked it because this happen to a MLB player. The book was OK but there wasn't that much Baseball action so I don't recommended it.

Luke Wallace gets hit in the faces while playing baseball and suffers an injury/ how does this affect him and the people around him. Kyle Dawkins, is the one that hits him with the ball while playing the game it was a mistake and he didn't mean to hit him then he has to deal with everything thoughts about him and feels so bad, Andy Keller is Luke's best friend and sees everything he goes without his best friend for a long time, over I think the book was OK it was hard to understand with all the people but I like the way it was set up,2 things I liked was how it was set up and and how it stayed on one thing most of the time, 1 thing i disliked was there was two many people to keep trake of.

Luke Wallace suffers an injury at the beginning of the novel. The rest books explores how Luke and the others deal with.
First, Luke is hit by a baseball, and get rushed to the hospital by the ball. Then, Kyle Dawkins feels bad for what he have done to Luke Wallace, and he feels that he could done better. Last, Andy Keller gets the opportunity to start at third place as a result of Luke's injury. Overall I do like this book a lot. First, I like how it tells the characters feelings about Luke being in the hospital for getting hit by the baseball ball. Last, I like how it's give us more details what's is happening in the book.

I disliked the parts where there was cussing because there is really no need for the cussing.
I liked how Luke was still a positive sport even when he was still hurting and going through all the pain.

Luke Wallace suffers an injury at the beginning of the book. The rest of the book shows how he and the people around him deal with it. Luke Wallace gets hit in the face with a baseball. Luke is in the hospital and he has to learn to deal with his blindness from the ball hitting him. Luke and a girl named Sarah Edgerton become really good friends and it slowly turns into a relationship. I didn't hate the book but I didn't love it either so I think it was OK. The book is not very long. So if you don't like reading but have to for school I would suggest you read this book. There are a lot of characters in the book which makes it very confusing when you have to remember all the names. For me I think that I would or would not recommend this book depending on who it is and what the situation is.

From April 2012 SLJ
Gr 6–10—This hi/lo series focuses on individual members of an elite travel team of 17-and-under baseball players from Las Vegas. In Forced Out, Zack's team gets the funding to play in a New York tournament that will have a lot of major-league-scout representation. However, when a new kid who's mediocre at best—but whose father is a multimillionaire—suddenly joins the team, Zack realizes that the coach might have compromised his standards for the travel money that Dustin's dad is promising. How can Zack support his coach and still be a good friend to the catcher, who is being forced out of his position by Dustin? In Power Hitter, Sammy Perez is one of the team's best hitters. When Coach signs the team up for a wooden-bat tournament, Sammy believes he will never be noticed by an MLB scout—his hits just are not as dramatic with wood—and he sees his dreams of supporting his family slipping away. His father tells him of a performance-enhancing drug that doesn't show up on tests, and Sammy is tempted to try them for that extra edge. Shortstop Trip Costas takes center stage in Out of Control. His father has lived out his baseball dreams through his sons, but Trip is tired of his father directing his life and wants to take a break. Only the wisdom of Coach Harris and others allows him to separate his frustration with his father from his feelings for the game. These authors pack a lot of drama and sports action into about 100 pages. The characters might be just a little too good to be true, but the tone is not didactic, and students will appreciate the real-life issues and ethical dilemmas that the players face.—

As the title suggests, this is a collection of baseball themed poems for children. The bright and happy illustrations enhance the poetry which can be read nostalgically by old-timers and with imagination by the young. With poetry, memorable tales of last-out-of-the-game, the baseball-lost-in-the-mean-neighbor's-yard, and surprise talent abound. Its a fun book that could inspire would be jocks to become would be poets.

A great book for sharing poetry with the class; particularly reluctant boys who aren't so sure about poetry.
