The primary voice in this book is that of a white male educator. While he does a good job of sharing what he has learned about getting to know (and work with) Native Americans, in the end you really are learning only his perceptions. Fedullo has created a career for himself of teaching English in Native American schools. He has been able to make it work because he learned behaviors which demonstrate respect for other cultures, and because he sincerely enjoys working with the students whom he expects to do well. He doesn't present a list of Do's and Don'ts, but his short chapters demonstrate his own learning process, his errors as well as his willingness to apologize, to share personal information, and be patient for the other person to trust him. Most Native Americans have a personal history (in addition to a long tribal history) of untrustworthy interfering white people, some of which is presented in this book. He also shares (with permission from all parties involved) positive experiences and friendships he has developed.… (más)
