Nick Dunn is Professor of Urban Design at Lancaster University. His work responds to the contemporary city as a series of systems, flows and processes, and is explored through experimentation and discourse addressing the nature of urban space: its perception, demarcation and appropriation.

Like the other book I read published by Zero Books (Capitalist Realism), this is full of academic and obscure words and can be quite annoying in its paint-by-numbers (or canned and cliched) critiques of capitalism thrown in at every turn, although sometimes the jargon and obscure language sort of blunts their impact--but, at times, this manifesto for walking at night and how the city is transformed can be quite rewarding. Certainly its indictment of screen time vs. time spent engaging with the real world is on target. The italicized bits of the book, sort of a stream-of-consciousness walk around Manchester, are also pretty engaging. Not sorry I read it, but I wish the publisher didn't have such an agenda and such a forgiving editor. (On the other hand, I didn't see any actual typos in this book, which shows a level of attention to detail that is rare for publishers these days.)… (más)
