I wondered why this book was so oldtimey--for something printed in 1993, it certainly takes a linear approach to speech production--completely articulation-based, as opposed to today's richer multivalent model. And okay, it does pay lip service to resonating chamber shape, and the role of the sub-glottal organs; and okay, it's in the very notion of the "speech chain" that it's linear. But still.

Then I realized that this was first published in the sixties, and it made a lot more sense. They did a good job of updating it, and you can tell that it was a good phonetics/perception textbook to start, but forty years is a lifetime. It also explains why they say things like "You may have learned a little bit about soundwaves when putting together your stereo." So yeah, worthy but a bit superseded?… (más)
