A good general itroduction
The Great Central Railway was the last main line to be built in Britain during the Age of Steam (and almost the first to disappear completely). As such, being built at the beginning of the 20th century, it fell to be extensively recorded by photography; in particular, through the photographs of S.W.A. Newton. Newton's negatives came into the posession of the Leicester City Museums, and they in turn produced a number of books chronicling the creation of the railway. This is one such, showing photographs of the locomotives used by the various contractors who built the railway on their temporary lines. It is a unique record.… (más)
