a bit more like the outline of a book, with some of the text filled in, than an actual book

A moderately interesting and marginally informative look at the Far East at the time of the Ring of Fire. Some good characters but a listless storyline does not inspire one to look for a sequel.½

The USE is extending its influence slowly into the rest of the world. China may be a harder nut to crack, it is much more insular. We will have to see how the butterfly wings affect happens.½

More of the same only in China where the places and names have less resonance for those raised in Western culture, which also diminishes the discomfort of historical figures used as play toys. Pretty light weight entry with most of the body count kept fairly remote.½

Good insights into the Middle Kingdom and the Dutch as a world power during this era. Lots of information and not much action in this expansion of the 1632 World. However, a siege that serves as an excellent introduction of more current weapons and other technology while repulsing one of the many warlord led bandit swarms that invested China until late in the 20th Century is nicely done.½

Another entry in Eric Flint et al's long-running 1632 series, taking the action to the Americas and Japan. A collection of "braided" short stories, this fits the description of a novel in stories except that there are two discrete parts.

The upside: This introduces Grantville's effect on far-flung reaches of the world.
The downside: It isn't very well written.

Mediocre book, rather limp story lines with characters that could disappear and no one would notice. The West Coast of the USA deserves better. Let us hope that history sustains and the vibrant East Coasties prevail against the vapid early arrivals. Certainly, the Mormon white shirters would show how to provide more vitality.

The first half about colonizing south America was good. The second about the Japanese colonizing California....not so good.

I had to read it, to keep up with what's happening in the series but it's a long way from Grantville, no charactors I cared about and dull.½
