Emma is a brown dog drawn in a loose, lumpy way with a thick black outline. She has lots of favorite things, like food and naps and walks and rolling in grass. Each day is a little different, until one day, Emma has puppies - seven! (On a page with only the words "...the day came," a puppy emerges headfirst from Emma, as Emma turns her own head to see what's happening.) A limited palette of brown, blue-gray, and green creates a calm mood.

This book was cute. It was about an older cat teaching and raising a younger cat but then the older cat dies and then the younger cat becomes the older cat and the family gets a new kitten and they keep this cycle going. It was sweet but I do not think I would have this in my classroom. It wasn't very interesting and it doesn't look like it would appeal to kids.

Story about two cats at the beginning. One is a big cat and one is a little cat. The big cat shows the little cat everything it needs to know about life and they have a great time! One day the big cat "goes away" and never comes back. It was hard on everyone. One day a little cat comes into the family. And the cycle starts again.

I liked this book, but it was so sad! I'm not sure if I could read this to a younger class without them getting sad or scared. And honestly I might get sad reading it to them! I think this is a really important book that handles loss very well, but I'm not sure if I would choose to read it to my class.

This book is about an older cat who welcomes a younger cat to his every day life. The older cat shows him what to do, where to eat, etc... One day the older cat left and went away and never came back. So the little cat continued to live his daily life, until a new little cat cam around and he showed the new cat the ways of his life.

I would recommend Big Cat Little Cat for a primary classroom, but a classroom that is stable enough to hear a cute story of a cat friendship but later coping with a loss. This book is black and white and full of lots of sun pictures and activities that the cats do together. It is encouraging for kids to be welcoming to a new friends or family member.

Beautifully simple, yet informative, tale of life on a modern family farm. The pace is slow and thoughtful. Soft watercolor illustrations depict the life and landscape. I have no doubt that adults will love this book – it is well done. I’m just not sure that it will hold the attention of younger readers. Title page includes a glossary of farming terms.

I keep comparing every book of Elisha Cooper's to "Big Cat, Little Cat"...and I do not get there. Never.

This book is fun in showcasing the differences between cats and dogs (and as a dog person, yep, totally accurate). And there are simple words and phrases that will be great for beginning readers. BUT there isn't the full emotional impact I wanted =/

Derp. I'm bummed by this cook. I loved Elisha Cooper's Caldecott honor title of "Big Cat, Little Cat." I believe in that book. But this one....I just don't. It's too wordy. Perhaps other offering by the author are the same way. I was just expecting something really different.

In the book Big Cat Little Cat its shows and explains to a child what death is about. Since the big cat is getting older the little cat learns its traits and skills from him. Eventually the big cat passes and the little cat mourns.

This book is an adventure book. And you get to see the adventure of the beaver finding his way home. Thru this book, it could be used to help beginning readers, start to learn about how to read picture books.

For a book with fairly simple artwork, a lot is conveyed, even on the exterior. The front of the dust jacket depicts the original big cat & little cat. The back of the dust jacket depicts the big cat & little cat from the end of the story. And underneath, on the boards, the original big cat and the end little cat are depicted in outlines, appraising each other. The illustration on the boards brings the book full circle.

Inside, Cooper's clean & spare illustrations highlight the universality and circular nature of the story.

The marvelously talented picture-book author and illustrator Elisha Cooper, who won a Caldecott Honor for his Big Cat, Little Cat, returns to the form in this lovely new title. Following a dog and cat through their day, this entertaining book compares and contrasts the personalities and internal rhythms of its canine and feline characters. As the narrator asks questions and makes suggestions, the dog and cat react differently, with the former being more enthusiastic and alert in the early part of the day, and the latter becoming more active later on...

As a great fan of Elisha Cooper's work, I was eager to track down a copy of Yes & No, and am pleased that it finally arrived at my local library. Although the structure of the book—the narrator's consistent interrogation of the animals—sometimes struck me as a little intrusive, I was so charmed by the concept, and the delightful artwork (done in ink and watercolor) that I still found the book excellent. Cooper's dog and cat are so expressive here—particularly the dog!—that it was a pleasure to peruse these pages. Recommended to fellow fans of Cooper's work, and to picture-book readers looking for dog and/or cat stories.

Read at the Carle

A day in the life of a dog and cat who share a household - but their personalities and energy levels are very different, creating effective counterpoint. The dog is a morning person, saying YES to breakfast and going outside, while the cat perks up later in the day, when the dog is tired.½
